What is hemp?

Hemp, also better known as industrial hemp, is a versatile plant that belongs to the Cannabis sativa species. Yes, that’s right. It is actually a type of cannabis, marijuana, or weed. However, this variant does not have hallucinogenic effects, making it legal to cultivate in Flanders by farmers, under some strict conditions. Human consumption or medicinal use is still prohibited.

Why hemp?

Hemp is actually an extraordinary crop with many opportunities that should definitely be utilized, such as:

  • Sustainability
The plant is a very sustainable crop. It grows extremely fast and requires minimal pesticides and herbicides. Additionally, it can grow in many different climates and soil types.
  • Strength
Hemp fibers are known for their strength. They have already been used in applications such as ropes, textiles, etc. The fibers are also weather-resistant. They are resistant to UV rays, moisture, mold, temperature fluctuations,... you name it.
  • Environmentally friendly
Using hemp also means that you contribute to a greener future. They absorb more CO2 than most other crops, thus helping to reduce greenhouse gases and shrink our ecological footprint.
  • Versatility
The applications of hemp are unimaginable. All parts of this plant can be used: the seeds for food and oil, the stems for biofuels and building materials, the leaves for animal feed, the fibers for traffic signs,...

From hemp to traffic sign

Okay, but how do we go from a plant to a traffic sign? The production process of this product is a fascinating combination of different techniques.

It all starts with harvesting the hemp fibers. These are thoroughly cleaned and prepared for further processing.

The cleaned hemp fibers are mixed with a strong binding agent. The mixture is processed, in which we are experts, into mats. These mats form the basis for the traffic signs. They are then pressed into the desired shape of a traffic sign, which ensures a sturdy and uniform structure.

After pressing, the signs are cured. The curing process is essential to guarantee the durability and weather resistance of the signs. Once they are fully cured, they are cut into the correct shape to achieve the final result.

There you go, we bet you learned something from this case. Hemp is truly something for the future, for a greener world. And with that, we at G-Desmet want to help.
